Extended 2 Day Global FAST® Point-of-Care Ultrasound Course: Learn AFAST® • TFAST® • Vet BLUE® • Global FAST® • Ultrasound-Guided Procedures
RACE Approved for 16 Hours of Live Medical CE Credits
Course Overview and Description
The Advanced Global FAST® Point-of-Care Ultrasound Course is an intensive, two-day continuing education program designed to provide veterinarians with a practical and clinically applicable
approach to point-of-care ultrasound. The program integrates the AFAST® POCUS, TFAST® POCUS, and Vet BLUE® (Veterinary Bedside Lung Ultrasound Exam) techniques into the comprehensive Global FAST® POCUS approach. The course emphasizes standardized ultrasound image acquisition, recognition of clinically relevant sonographic findings, and incorporation of point-of-care ultrasound into patient evaluation, triage, monitoring, and clinical decision-making.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this 16-hour program, participants should have developed the foundational knowledge and practical scanning skills necessary to incorporate Global FAST® point-of-care ultrasound
into everyday veterinary patient evaluation. The overall goals of the course are to enable participants to:
1. Develop a standardized approach to point-of-care ultrasound image acquisition using proper probe orientation, probe maneuvering, patient positioning, and image optimization techniques.
2. Perform the AFAST® POCUS examination using its standardized view order and target-organ approach and apply the AFAST® abdominal fluid scoring system to bleeding and non-bleeding patients.
3. Perform the TFAST® POCUS examination and recognize sonographic findings associated with pleural effusion, pericardial effusion, and pneumothorax.
4. Acquire and interpret fundamental TFAST® echocardiographic views and understand their clinical applications in the assessment of cardiac volume, contractility, and left- and right-sided abnormalities.
5. Perform the Vet BLUE® lung ultrasound examination using its standardized regional approach and distinguish dry lung from wet lung patterns.
6. Recognize and apply the six Vet BLUE® lung ultrasound signs, including the Shred Sign, Tissue Sign, Nodule Sign, and Wedge Sign, and use the Vet BLUE® B-line scoring system to assess and monitor pulmonary disease.
7. Integrate AFAST® POCUS, TFAST® POCUS, and Vet BLUE® POCUS into the Global FAST® POCUS examination as an extension of the physical examination and use Global FAST® POCUS findings to support patient staging, monitoring, clinical decision-making, and identification of diagnostic sampling sites.
8. Develop fundamental ultrasound-guided procedural skills, including appropriate needle visualization using in-plane and out-of-plane techniques.
9. Understand and perform common ultrasound-guided procedures, including fine-needle aspiration, abdominocentesis, thoracocentesis, pericardiocentesis, and vascular access.
Curriculum:
Day 1 — Core Global FAST® POCUS Concepts and Ultrasound-Guided Procedures Laboratory
- 9 am to 12 pm: Lecture (AFAST® including AFAST® Target Organ Approach and Abdominal Fluid Scoring System and TFAST® including TFAST® Fundamental Echocardiography with EPIC Guideline Measurements and Assessment for Pleural and Pericardial Effusion)
- 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm: Lecture (TFAST® Part II and Vet BLUE® Lung Ultrasound)
- 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm: Scanning Dry Lab including Fundamentals of Imaging and Ultrasound Guided Procedures Lab (performing fine needle aspirates, abdominocentesis, thoracocentesis, pericardiocentesis and vascular access)
- 5:30 pm to 6 pm: Q & A and Closing Comments

Day 2 — Advanced Applications and Hands-On Global FAST® Scanning
- 8 am to 12 pm: Advanced POCUS Topics on Applications of Global FAST® POCUS Examinations including:
- Clinical Applications of Vet BLUE® POCUS for assessing and managing respiratory and heart failure patients
- Using Global FAST® POCUS to assess traditionally difficult cardiac cases (pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary thromboembolism, left atrial rupture in mitral disease dogs, etc)
- Global FAST® POCUS for the Hs and Ts of Treatable Forms of Shock
- 1 pm to 5 pm: Global FAST® POCUS Hands- On Scanning Session
- The “Live Dogs” Global FAST® Scanning Session will cover image acquisition fundamentals including AFAST®, TFAST® including EPIC Guideline Measurements, and Vet BLUE®, pearls and pitfalls, and then finishing with teaching the time efficient Global FAST® POCUS Protocol of all its views, AFAST®, TFAST® and Vet BLUE®
