Our formats are published in Mattoon’s Small Animal Diagnostic Ultrasound, 4th Edition, Ettinger’s Veterinary Internal Medicine, 9th Edition, Cohn and Cote’s Clinical Veterinary Advisor, Current Veterinary Topics, Veterinary Clinics of North America, and our 1st and 2nd Edition of Point-of-care Ultrasound for the Small Animal Practitioner, 2014, 2021.

Recently, Dr. Greg Lisciandro was awarded the 2023 Bourgelat Award by the British Small Animal Association for outstanding international contributions to small animal veterinary medicine.

Courses are from 8:00 AM to 6 PM with practical, every day case-based AFAST®, TFAST®  and Vet BLUE®  applications in lecture followed by AFAST®, TFAST®  and Vet BLUE®  afternoon hands-on scanning.  This is an intense day so come rested and please fly out the following morning.  These combined are called Global FAST® which is an extension of your physical exam. Global FAST® is everyday ultrasound on almost every patient!

AFAST® – its target-organ approach, its abdominal fluid scoring system, practical and heavily case-based.

  • Understand the image acquisition and target-organ approach for soft tissue abnormalities
  • Understand its fluid scoring system for the bleeding patient and other subsets
  • Understand how to measure the urinary bladder, identify free air, and assess volume status
  • Know how to detect gallbladder wall edema, know its major rule outs, and gain familiarity with the newly described medically-treated anaphylactic hemoabdomen in dogs

TFAST® – its use for accurately detecting pleural and pericardial effusion, the 4 TFAST® Echo views, pneumothorax, practical and heavily case-based.

  • Understand its 5-view format and each views strengths
  • Understand the TFAST® rules to follow for the accurate detection of pericardial and pleural effusion
  • Understand the TFAST® Diagnosis of Pneumothorax and the Lung Point Principle
  • Understand fundamental TFAST® Echocardiography and each view’s clinical utility (volume and contractility, left-sided and right-sided problems)
  • Understand the EPIC Guidelines and their Echocardiography Measurements for Mitral Valve Disease Dogs

Vet BLUE® – the 6 Vet BLUE® Lung Ultrasound Signs, its regional pattern-based approach for a working diagnosis, practical and heavily case-based.

  • Understand it’s 8-transthoracic views and the fundamental orientation of all lung ultrasound, the Gator Sign
  • Understand the “Wet Lung” versus “Dry Lung” principle and how to develop a working diagnosis with the regional, pattern-based approach of Vet BLUE®
  • Understand the Vet BLUE® B-line Scoring System and its Inherent Severity Scoring for Monitoring patients
  • Understand the Vet BLUE® signs of lung consolidation called the Shred Sign, Tissue Sign, Nodule Sign, and Wedge Sign – The Vet BLUE® Visual Lung Language
  • Understand the Strengths and Limitations and Pitfalls of Vet BLUE® and lung ultrasound

Global FAST® – the combined use of AFAST®, TFAST®, and Vet BLUE® as a single format used as an extension of the physical exam.

  • Understand its “Global FAST® Blend” of the left to the right side of patients, low impact and fast (< 8-minutes)
  • Understand its use to prevent imaging interpretation errors
  • Understand Global FAST® use for staging patients with localized versus disseminated disease
  • Understand Global FAST® use for searching for potential diagnostic sampling sites

Global FAST® Courses have limited enrollment with no more than 3-4 attendees per scanning station.  Each station has a FASTVet-approved Instructor and when possible, a technician holding your canine volunteer.

    • Snacks, beverages and lunch are provided
    • AFAST® , TFAST®  and Vet BLUE® Manuals are given to all attendees

Important Information Regarding Cancellations:  All course registration fees are non-refundable but Registration Fees may be applied to another future Global FAST® Course date. However, changes in course registration must be made at least 30 days prior to the enrolled class to avoid a $250 fee for rescheduling. Reenrollment is also subject to availability. If we have to cancel the course due to unknown or unforeseen circumstances, then fees may be refundable or transferred to another course date or online course bundle.
